| sample_remark | Cairns 1997 paraphrased:"Quartz Diorite. Plagioclase (up to 1mm) is the dominant component of this unit comprising some 50 % of the samples examined. Plagioclase showed both multiple and simple Carlsbad twins, however optical definition of the anorthite content was ambiguous. Pale green pleochroic hornblende (15-20%) was the other major mineral component. It is dominantly found has subhedral grains, although the presence of some euhedral twinned crystals is also noted. Most of the hornblende was primary although a number of examples were found where hornblende was found forming a rim around a core of pyroxene (?clinopyroxene ). Quartz, potassium feldspar and biotite were all found in varying amounts up to 5%. Accessory minerals are epidote, chlorite with minor opaques. Although the samples showed signs of alteration to epidote and chlorite none of the samples observed were seen to be deformed." |
