sample_remark The sample is a coarse-grained felspathic sandstone collected from southeast of the Mount Cobalt mine in the upper part of a succession mapped as New Hope Sandstone Member. The member consists of prominent beds of brown to cream or pink, massive to locally graded, medium to very thick-bedded, coarse-grained feldspathic sandstone with subordinate interbeds of more micaceous metasandstone and pelitic mica schist. The succession at the sample site is overturned, and youngs to the west. It is overlain by the upper part of the Starcross Formation, which is the parent unit of the New Hope Sandstone Member. In thin section, the sample consists of a mosaic of quartz and subordinate feldspar and minor muscovite. The grainsize distribution shows bimodality with coarser grains 0.5–2 mm in a finer matrix 0.5–0.2 mm, but the low abundance of muscovite indicates that there was little clay in the protolith. Four samples of the New Hope Sandstone Member have been dated previously. One located east of the Kuridala smelter site (Geochron Delivery, sample 1925991/2005169048) gave a maximum depositional age of 1676 ± 4 Ma (Withnall, 2019). Another from the Tip Top mine area (Geochron Delivery, sample 1925942/2006169014) yielded an interpreted maximum deposition age of 1674 ± 9 Ma (Withnall, 2019). A quartzo-feldspathic sandstone sample from northeast of Mount Cobalt (sample 1925943/2006169015) yielded a maximum depositional age of 1693 ± 9 Ma (recalculated to 1691 ± 9 Ma, Withnall, 2019). Lewis et al. (2020) determined a maximum depositional age of 1662 ± 22 Ma for the New Hope Sandstone Member (2614024/SSMI-139) south of Mount Dore. This sample from near the top of the member was collected to further constrain the age of the unit and that of the Starcross Formation and lower part of the Kuridala Group.
