geological_province None
sample_remark The sample consists of non-foliated, pink, mainly medium-grained, equigranular biotite granite collected from the northeastern margin of the outcrop area of the Mount Cobalt Granite, 5 km northeast of Mount Cobalt mine and 19 km south of Selwyn. The granite is well exposed as rugged tors and spheroidal boulders forming a small bean-shaped pluton ~1 km long from north to south and ~600 m wide. It consists predominantly of pink, medium to fine-grained biotite granite as described and minor aplite and intrudes the Starcross Formation of the Paleoproterozoic Kuridala Group. In thin section, the sample consists of ~25% interlocking quartz mostly 1–1.5 mm, ~25–30% perthitic K-feldspar 1–2 mm, rarely showing cross-hatch twinning, ~30–35% plagioclase as subhedral laths, usually 1–2 mm but up to 4 mm, and ~15% ragged flakes of reddish brown biotite 1–2 mm. Opaque oxides, rare green hornblende to 0.5 mm and accessory titanite to 1 mm and zircon are also present. The rock is undeformed — quartz is relatively unstrained strained and there are no zones of granulation. The Mount Cobalt Granite is probably closely related to the petrographically similar Mount Dore and Yellow Waterhole granites to the north and south respectively and the Squirrel Hills Granite, which forms a large batholith to the east. All intrude the Kuridala Group and are part of the Williams Supersuite. The Squirrel Hills Granite (1514 ± 5 Ma and 1511 ± 9 Ma), Mount Dore Granite (1516 ± 10 Ma) and the Yellow Waterhole Granite (1510 ± 8 Ma) were dated by Pollard and McNaughton (1997).
