sample_remark This sample of Answer Slate was collected in the northern part of the Marimo–Staveley Domain about 4 km south of sample 2678686/ASMI0134 east of the road to Top Camp. The Marimo–Staveley Domain is a folded thrust-belt consisting of alternating slices of Answer Slate (dominantly carbonaceous cleaved mudstone) and Staveley Formation (typically calcareous sandstone and siltstone passing into calc-silicate granofels). Some slices of Roxmere Quartzite (mostly very thick bedded, amalgamated lithic sublabile sandstone) also occur. The outcrop sampled consists of medium to thick-bedded, fine-grained quartz sandstone, intercalated with grey slate or cleaved siltstone with planar laminae and local flaser bedding. Apart from the presence of sandstone, the outcrops were noted as being more typical of the Answer Slate. In thin section, the sample consists of a mosaic of interlocking quartz and subordinate feldspar, mostly 0.05–0.1 mm, but local grains are up to 1 mm. A foliation defined by anastomosing films of brown iron oxide and very fine-grained muscovite is evident.
