sample_remark This sample was collected from the northern part of the Marimo–Staveley Domain in the Slaty Creek area where slices of Answer Slate (dominantly carbonaceous cleaved mudstone) alternate with Staveley Formation (typically calcareous sandstone and siltstone passing into calc-silicate granofels). Some slices of Roxmere Quartzite (mostly very thick bedded, amalgamated lithic sublabile sandstone) also occur. The outcrop sampled consists of well-sorted, very thick-bedded, medium- to coarse-grained, quartzofeldspathic sandstone to granule conglomerate. The beds are mostly massive, but rare crossbedding is present. In thin section, the sample consists of a mosaic of interlocking quartz and subordinate feldspar grains 0.05–0.25 mm and accessory opaque oxides grains. The absence of mica indicates that the sandstone was originally well sorted with no clay matrix. The rocks are currently mapped within a less carbonaceous subunit Answer Slates as depicted on the Marraba 1:100 000 Geological map (Withnall et al., 2015). That subunit is described as “brown phyllite or fine-grained mica schist and graphitic slate” on the map legend, and because such massive, coarse-grained sandstone as observed in 2017 at this site and several other sites are not typical of either the Staveley Formation or Answer Slate in general, we speculated that they might represent slices of Roxmere Quartzite. Common outcrops of ribbon quartz suggest that unmapped faults transect the unit.
