sample_remark Drillhole PYD003 lies in the central southern Yorke Peninsula and intersected well-foliated equigranular pink granite. Much of the microgranite has clots of biotite that, together with the elongated quartz-feldspar, form the prominent foliation within the rock. The core also shows zones of K-feldspar and hematite alteration and there are some zones of brecciation that overprint the foliation of the microgranite. Interlayered with the felsic rocks are thin zones of biotite +/- hornblende-rich mafic rock, now amphibolite. This sample represents the felsic rock from this drillhole, and was targeted for analysis in order constrain the age of the basement in this region of the Yorke Peninsula. In thin section, this sample is a medium-grained quartz-K-feldspar gneiss, with lesser biotite and magnetite. The quartz is dynamically recrystallised and is part of a granoblastic texture, with a prominent shape preferred orientation. Plagioclase is strongly altered to sericite-quartz-hematite. The K-feldspar shows multiple twinning and is likely microcline. An opaque species is present throughout the rock, likely magnetite that is intergrown with the quartz-feldspar matrix. Biotite is present as green laths intergrown with the quartz-feldspar matrix. The biotite is extensively altered to green chlorite. Minor epidote alteration also appears to affect some of the micas. In places, rhombs of calcite are also present, and are part of the chlorite-hematite alteration assemblage. Hematite is distributed as fine blebby alteration throughout the plagioclase-biotite portion of the rock mass, and grain boundaries are typically reddened by microscopic hematite. This hematite gives the rock its reddish colour.
