sample_remark Drillhole PYD001 lies in the central southern Yorke Peninsula and penetrated variably magnetite-sericite altered gneissic "granite" with local zones of magnetite-biotite-chlorite-sericite-pyrite-chalcopyrite alteration. The gneissic granite appears to have zones of partial melt, i.e. leucosome, which together with the biotite-rich melanosome defines a gneissic layering. This sample has been selected to determine the age of the protolith to see if it is part of the basement to the Wallaroo Group, i.e. Donington Suite, or whether it represents an apparently higher metamorphic grade equivalent of some portion of the Wallaroo Group. In thin section, the sample is a quartz-feldspar-muscovite-biotite gneiss. The sample preserves a granoblastic gneissic texture. The biotite-muscovite rich zones in the rock alternate with mica-poor zones and this alternation defines the gneissic foliation of the sample. Quartz is recrystallised and shows lobate grain boundaries in some instances. Plagioclase is variable altered by fine-grained sericite. K-feldspar is of lesser abundance than the plagioclase, and is intergrown in the granoblastic texture with the quartz and plagioclase. Muscovite occurs as laths to 1 mm in size, as does biotite. Biotite appears slightly more altered than the muscovite, with chlorite intergrown with some biotite crystals. There is magnetite within the rock present within the granoblastic texture suggesting it is part of the metamorphic mineral assemblage.
