sample_remark Sample R2023011 (depth 54.1-54.3 m) is a siliceous iron formation from within the Wilgerup Deposit, from a unit considered to be either Upper or Lower Middleback Jaspilite. The ages of zircon in this sample will enable us to place the Wilgerup schist into the context of the recent work that has subdivided the Hutchison Group into three occurrences of dolomite-BIF-schist successions; differing in their ages and schist protolith provenances (Szpunar et al. 2011a; Szpunar et al. 2011b). This sample is a finely laminated hematite-dominated iron formation. Layering is defined by greater or lesser abundances of hematite, which occurs as small, <50-micron angular crystals. The hematite can be seen to be replacing magnetite as in many instances, the core of the hematite grains is composed of magnetite. Hematite also occurs in the matrix as red masses, intergrown with the very fine grained quartz-dominated matrix. Minor chlorite occurs along small fractures. Some small, <100-micron zircons are observed within the quartz-rich matrix. Sample R2023012 (depth 57.2-57.5 m) is more siliceous metasediment than sample R2023011 within the same iron formation. Both samples are from close intervals of the same drillhole, and their SHRIMP zircon results have been combined for the purpose of interpretation.
