sample_remark Jagodzinski & Reid 2015 (RB 2015/00003): This sample is from a drillhole to the west of the Middleback Range. The drillhole intercepted a thick package of schistose rock with some intervals of calc-silicate. The sample submitted for geochronology is a schistose metasedimentary rock, with layering defined by variation in abundance of muscovite and quartz. Minor magnetite may be present in the rock. The rock appears to preserve isoclinals folds defined by darker zones, which appear to have the limbs sheared out by a pervasive axial planar schistosity that dominates the rock type. In thin section, the sample is a medium-grained quartz-biotite schist. The rock has a very strong preferred mineral alignment, and the schistosity is thus defined by the elongate biotite laths along with the preferred alignment of the dynamically recrystallised quartz. Quartz crystals are subequant in aspect, and occur within microlithons enclosed by the muscovite-rich foliation. The biotite occurs as thin laths that define the schistosity, which in some portions of the section is an extensional crenulation cleavage, with C and C' planes of shear present. Plagioclase and lesser K-feldspar occur within distinct microlithons, and also within quartz-rich domains. The rock underwent secondary alteration. Plagioclase and K-feldspar crystals are almost entirely decomposed to fine grained sericite, particularly around the grain boundaries. Hematite and quartz-filled fractures extend across the section, are up to 100 μm wide and both truncate the schistosity and occur sub-parallel to it.
