sample_remark Drillhole BUDD146, within the Bungalow Prospect, penetrated the magnetite iron formation sequence into a more westerly zone of gneisses that are interpreted to be basement to the iron formation. This sample is a weakly chloritised quartzofeldspathic gneiss. The rock appears to have quartz + feldspar rich segregations, likely migmatitic leucosomes. Some of the K-feldspar crystals appear larger than others and it is possible that this rock has a meta-igneous protolith. In thin section, the sample is a medium-grained quartz-K-feldspar-plagioclase-biotite-muscovite gneiss. Quartz is extensively recrystallised and ranges from coarse- to medium-grain size, and fine-grained subgrains developed at the margins of the larger quartz grains. Quartz is broadly elongate and defines a shape preferred orientation that, together with bands of biotite-muscovite defines the gneissic foliation in the rock. Plagioclase and K-feldspar (microcline) is present, generally as medium to coarse grains. Biotite is brown and occurs as laths <200 microns. Muscovite is the lesser of the two micas, and has a similar grain size. Very fine-grained sericite alteration affects many plagioclase crystals which are cloudy in transmitted light related to the incipient alteration. One patch of myrmekite intergrowth of quartz and plagioclase is observed in the thin section. Green chlorite is also present along fine fractures and interstitial to the metamorphic minerals.
