sample_remark | AFO Comet 1 was drilled in 1965 by Associated Freney Oil Field. Basement was intersected at 717 metres and the hole terminated at 917 metres. The hole penetrates the Bowen Basin to the east of the outcropping Anakie Province and terminates in tuffaceous sandstone. Five cores, totalling 12.14 metres, were recovered from Comet 1 (Mines Administration Ltd, 1965; QDEX:1731). Core 2 is the most coarse-grained and was selected for geochronology to test correlation with the Combarngo Volcanics, identified in the Roma Shelf area (Murray, 1994) as a Late Carboniferous to Early Permian volcanic succession at the base of the Bowen Basin. The sample selected is a shallow-dipping, pale grey/green, silicified tuffaceous sandstone. |
