| sample_remark | The sample collected for analysis is from a conglomeratic sandstone outcrop in the southern bank of the Walsh River upstream of the main road crossing. The sandstone is massive and probably represents an amalgamated interval consisting of several individual sandstone beds stacked on top of one another in subunit SDc/a1 of the Chillagoe Formation. The subunit is interlayered with chert, metabasalt, and minor conglomerate and limestone, and is faulted in places against another sandstone subunit (SDc/a2). The sandstone is pale brown, poorly sorted, mainly medium- to coarse-grained but ranging from fine- to very coarse-grained. It consists mainly of quartz and subordinate feldspar grains, with lithic fragments a minor but relatively common component. Clasts are generally angular, range up to ca 1 cm in length, and consist mainly of intraformational, dark grey to black mudstone (‘rip-ups’). |
