sample_remark | Jeon et al 2012 paraphrased: "The rocks of the Bundarra Supersuite are felsic monzogranites. Without exception their CIPW normative quartz, albite and orthoclase compositions plot extremely close to the experimentally determined minimum-temperature melt compositions of Tuttle and Bowen (1958) at 50-100 MPa (Chappell, 2010). There is no evidence of extended fractional crystallization, only 2 of 47 analyzed samples have Rb contents slightly above 250 ppm (http://brucechappell.com.au/). The granites are mostly very coarse-grained (3-10 mm) and commonly porphyritic, with Kfeldspar phenocrysts up to 80 mm long. Fe3+:Fe2+ ratios are low, reflected in the presence of ilmenite rather than magnetite, and the K-feldspar in these reduced rocks is always white. All the rocks are Al-saturated, with an average of 1.2% normative corundum, which is reflected in the ubiquitous presence of muscovite, cordierite, and rarely almandine-rich garnet. The cordierite occurs as euhedral crystals up to 20 mm long with well developed prismatic faces and commonly rimmed by muscovite. Its abundance ranges from 1% in the most biotite-rich granites to trace amounts in the more felsic granites (Flood and Shaw, 1975). Apatite always occurs as large prisms. REE patterns show light REE enrichment and slight negative Eu anomalies (Shaw and Flood, 1981). Zircon was extracted from samples of three plutons from the length of the Bundarra Supersuite, the Banalasta monzogranite in the south, the Linton monzogranite in the north, and the Copeton monzogranite near the centre." Zircon grains are described as clear, euhedral, and unaltered. |
