geological_province McArthur Basin
sample_remark The sample was collected from near the top of the Mount Birch Sandstone a few metres stratigraphically below the concealed contact with the overlying recessive Knuckey Formation, which is exposed in an excavation at this site. The sample site is located about 1 km SSW of Munbililla (Tomato Island) Campsite, in central Urapunga, in the vicinity of a landfill site adjacent to the Nathan River Road. The sample was collected from a steep dip slope on the northern side of a thickly wooded rocky ridge. Exposures of Mount Birch Sandstone at the sampling site consist of rare beds and abundant blocky rubble of trough cross-bedded, fine- to medium- to coarse-grained, cream to light brown sandstone with mudrock rip-up clasts and minor cobble conglomerate. The sample is of a mature, silicified, fine-grained quartz sandstone, consisting of 90–95% sub-angular to well-rounded quartz, 5–10% chert grains, and accessory zircon in a siliceous authigenic overgrowth cement.
