sample_remark Sparsely porphyritic biotite granite of the I-type Hawksview Granite (e.g. Chappell et al., 1991). In thin section, this medium-grained biotite granite contains uncommon (~10%) plagioclase phenocrysts up to 5 mm long, within a seriate groundmass 0.3-3 mm in diameter. Plagioclase crystals are zoned, with cores altered to sericite and epidote. Potassium feldspar is perthitic, and partly altered to clay minerals. Biotite is partially altered to chlorite, muscovite and epidote, and commonly hosts inclusions of apatite and zircon. Square- to wedge-shaped opaque oxide minerals (which total about 2% of the rock) are associated with titanite alteration, and are probably ilmenite or titanomagnetite. Pavement outcrops at this locality show the Hawksview Granite intruding foliated muscovite-bearing granite of the 419.9 +/- 3.4 Ma (2sigma) Bethanga Gneissic Granite (Keay et al., 1999). Keay et al. (1999) obtained a U-Pb SHRIMP zircon date of 422.0 +/- 3.0 Ma (2sigma) from the Hawksview Granite, implying rapid deformation of the granitic protolith of the Bethanga Gneissic Granite prior to emplacement of the Hawksview Granite. More recently, local I-type granites have yielded Early Devonian ages (415.1 +/- 2.0 Ma for the Holbrook Granite and 415.7 +/- 2.6 Ma for the Thologolong Granite; Bodorkos et al., 2015). The Hawksview Granite was targeted for U-Pb SHRIMP zircon geochronology to clarify its relationship with the Bethanga Gneissic Granite, and nearby I-type plutons.
