sample_remark | Coarse-grained muscovite-tourmaline granite of the Goombargana Granite (Chappell et al., 1991). In thin section, this equigranular muscovite-tourmaline granite consists of a mosaic of 1-7 mm crystals containing about 10% tourmaline. K-feldspar is perthitic, and commonly microcline, with tartan twinning. Plagioclase hosts fine-grained muscovite inclusions. No geochemical analyses are available for the Goombargana Granite, but its mineralogy suggests that it is an S-type pluton. It was targeted for U-Pb SHRIMP zircon geochronology in order to establish its relationship to nearby mid-Silurian S-type granites of the Koetong Supersuite, including the 428.7 +/- 2.8 Ma Buckingbong Granite (ERIVSJT1548.01) and the 427.3 +/- 2.3 Ma Gillenbah Granite (ERIVPJG0259.01) to the N, the 429.2 +/- 2.5 Ma Alma Park Granite to the NE (ERIVKFB0381.01), and the 429.2 +/- 2.0 Ma Nest Hill Granite to the E (Bodorkos et al., 2015). |
