| sample_remark | The sample of Horn Island Granite was collected at the Alice Queen Limited exploration camp on Horn Island, Torres Strait from exploration drillhole 17NGD026 (145.8-149.3 m), drilled by Alice Queen Limited in 2017 on behalf of its subsidiary company, Kauraru Gold Pty Ltd (Hell, 2017). This drillhole intersected gold mineralisation of the Pioneer Reef on the western side of the Horn Island open cut gold mine. The heavily altered porphyritic (micro-) granite is a red to olive green, hornblende-biotite granite with sub-microscopic hematite-dusted K-feldspar phenocrysts (orange, 3 to 18 mm, 20-30%), heavily altered plagioclase phenocrysts (light green to olive, 0.5 to 4 mm, 5-10%) and quartz phenocrysts (light grey, 0.5 to 8 mm), biotite (dark green to black, chlorite-altered, 0.3 to 2 mm) and some altered hornblende (dark green, 1-2 mm). Notably the phenocrysts are significantly larger than the microcrystalline granitic matrix, which consists of very fine-grained quartzo-feldspathic intergrowths, with all feldspar and quartz grains exhibiting anhedral shapes. The sample also shows common thin quartz veins throughout. |
