sample_remark This sample was collected from a conspicuous line of outcrops near Black Rock Dam about 14 km southwest of Selwyn on the southern side of the Selwyn–Chatsworth Road. They consist of banded, very fine-grained, dark grey calcareous metasandstone or calc-silicate mapped as Staveley Formation. In thin section, the sample consists of ~40% very fine-grained (<0.05 mm) quartz and feldspar, ~20% calcite to 0.5 mm and ~25% subparallel flakes of biotite to 0.1 mm defining a foliation. In addition, larger flakes of muscovite to 0.5 mm lie across the foliation. Lenticular aggregates up to 5 mm long of coarser calcite and muscovite (~0.5 mm) are oblique to the foliation. This sample of Staveley Formation was selected to provide an additional maximum depositional age constraint for the formation.
