| sample_remark | The Eastern Creek Volcanics are intruded by multiple, north-south trending, metadolerite to metagabbro dykes. One of these dykes crops out at the base of Telstra Hill about 5.7 km east of Mount Isa where it cuts across the Cromwell Metabasalt Member of the Eastern Creek Volcanics . The weathered outcrop is a north-south-trending (018°), 80–100 m wide dyke outcropping as large boulders. Major minerals include clinopyroxene, plagioclase and hornblende. The dyke contains coarser-grained domains that display pegmatoidal textures, characterised by ‘bladed’ crystals typically 1–2 mm wide and up to 15 mm long . Portable XRF results suggest that the pegmatoidal zones are richer in Zr compared to the finer-grained component of the rock, yielding >100 ppm Zr and <30 ppm Zr respectively. The coarse-grained pegmatoidal domains were targeted for U-Pb zircon geochronology to obtain a magmatic crystallisation age for the mafic dyke and a minimum age on the Eastern Creek Volcanics. |
