sample_remark BB5685 was collected from abundant outcrop on a prominent ridge up to ~15 m above the surrounding plain. It comprises dark grey, slightly uneven-grained, leucocratic feldspathic gneiss characterised by fine banding, and could be either a metarhyolite or a leucogranite. It contains a black mineral (possibly magnetite) as a relatively abundant minor component. The unit is cut by sparse, scattered pegmatite veins up to ~1.5 m thick. It is oxidised, with the average of 11 magnetic susceptibility readings being 39.5 x 10-3 SI units. In thin section, the rock is fine- to medium-grained (ranges from ~0.3 mm to 3 mm; average ~1 mm), and modal proportions are ~40% quartz, ~30% K-feldspar, ~25% plagioclase, ~3% biotite, ~1% muscovite, ~1% opaque oxide minerals. Anhedral quartz grains (with undulose extinction) are relatively common and relatively large. K-feldspar (microcline) is more abundant than plagioclase, mainly perfectly fresh, and features very well-developed cross-hatched twinning. Plagioclase grains are commonly slightly to moderately altered to sericite and fine-grained muscovite. Biotite is more abundant than muscovite. Minor but relatively common opaque oxide minerals are almost certainly magnetite in view of the high magnetic susceptibility. The rock also contains traces of allanite, myrmekite and zircon (as relatively coarse grains), as well as rarer titanite (generally associated with and/or partly rimming opaque oxide minerals; more rarely as discrete grains) and secondary calcite.
