| sample_remark | Biotite-rich gneiss forms bouldery outcrop on the S side of a track. The unit is characterised by highly contorted thin banding/layering, as well as biotite-rich boudins/inclusions/"relicts" ranging from 5 cm to ~1 m across. These are common in places, and sample BB5675 was collected from one of the larger of these mafic boudins. These gneisses are crosscut by dykes comprising equigranular medium-grained muscovite-biotite granite, of which BB5676 is representative. In thin section, BB5675 appears to be a fine-grained equigranular meta-granodiorite or meta-tonalite. It is even-grained, with an average grainsize of ~0.5 mm, and biotite and quartz comprise ~20 modal% each. The thin-section is dominated by an extremely altered unidentified mineral (with low first order birefringence; probably plagioclase) which is extensively replaced by sericite and/or fine-grained muscovite, commonly with minor quartz, biotite, epidote, calcite and very rare tourmaline. No relict twinning of any sort observed. K-feldspar is much less prevalent, but the grains are fresh to only slightly altered, and show Carlsbad twinning. Biotite grains show undulose extinction. The rock contains traces of muscovite (as small grains replacing probable plagioclase), euhedral-subhedral epidote, as well opaque oxide minerals and titanite (including some instances of opaque oxide grains rimmed by titanite) and calcite. |
