| sample_remark | The sample site is part of an area of low-grade metasedimentary rocks north and northeast of Pinnacle Well in the Mallee Bore area. Regional magnetic data indicates that the site is situated at the eastern limit of the Irindina Province, which is characterised by marked magnetic trends and associated faults. Rocks in the area lack the strong, generally west-trending strain overprint of higher-grade rocks of the Irindina Province. However, as in the higher-grade rocks, folds in these lower-grade rocks are simple and upright. Approximately 2 km to the west-northwest are the migmatitic rocks of the Irindina Province. On the basis of the preceding points, the sample was dated to determine if it was part of the Irindina Province, or whether it was a section of a fault-emplaced basement metasedimentary succession on the margins of the Irindina Province. The sample site comprises a finely interlayered succession of metapsammitic, quartz-rich metapsammitic and andalusite-rich metapelitic rocks; the quartzitic metapsammitic rock was sampled for geochronology. The succession is tightly folded on upright folds with steeply plunging east-southeast fold axes. No visible melts were observed and the metapelitic and metapsammitic rocks are comprised of quartz-feldspar-biotite +/- andalusite. The metamorphic grade is amphibolite facies and these rocks are interpreted to be lower-grade equivalents of granulite-facies, migmatitic quartz-feldspar-biotite-garnet +/- sillimanite metapelitic and metapsammitic rocks of the Irindina Province exposed further to the west. |
