| sample_remark | The sample is a silicified and recrystallised pale grey quartzite, with poorly preserved bedding and rare cross-bedding lamination, and is typical of the Utopia Quartzite. Bedding thickness is approximately 15 cm, but is locally in the range 5-30 cm. Rarely preserved cross-beds give occasional younging directions. The sample was taken from the northern limb of a large, reclined synclinal/anticlinal fold of Utopia Quartzite and underlying Ledan Schist. The contact between the two units is conformable on the regional scale, but local disconformities and shearing may be present as a result of a weak decollement between the quartzite and metapsammite of the Ledan Schist. The sample was taken away from the contact, well within the Utopia Quartzite. |
