sample_remark | Drill hole APC Thunderbolt 1 was drilled by Amerada Petroleum Company in 1967 and penetrated basement from 1607.5 metres (Amerada Petroleum Company, 1967, QDEX: 2179). Thunderbolt 1 is one of a very limited number of drill holes that penetrate volcanic material in the subsurface Thomson Orogen below the Eromanga and Galilee Basins. Sample 2130084/TH745 is a distinctively crystal-rich, pale pinkish brown, strongly welded rhyolitic ignimbrite. It comprises large fragments of embayed quartz up to 15 mm, angular pink potassium feldspar from <1 mm to 12 mm and euhedral but small and sparse biotite up to 5 mm but mostly <1 mm. The groundmass is highly siliceous, medium brown in colour and exhibits evidence of strongly deformed (welded) former glass shards. |
