sample_remark | GSQ Mitchell 1 was drilled in 1972 by the Geological Survey of Queensland. It intersected high-grade metasedimentary rocks of the Nebine Ridge at 717.9 metres after penetrating sediments of the Surat Basin (Wallin, 1974). The metasedimentary units in Mitchell 1 consist of interbedded metasiltstone, metasandstone and quartzite. The basement lithologies are phyllitic to schistose and generally steeply dipping with s0 parallel to s1. Sample 2130080/TH438 from 767.49-770.53 metres consists of laminated quartz-mica phyllite. In thin section the rock is characterised by alternating quartz-rich and phyllosilicate-rich layers. Quartz is highly strained and recrystallised. Phyllosilicate-rich layers include varying proportions of quartz and exhibit anastomosing shear zones. Detrital grains include quartz, muscovite (identified as larger grains within phyllosilicate-rich layers) and rare feldspar. |
