sample_remark Diorite intrusion, Goobang Volcanics. This is a medium-grained diorite obtained from diamond drill core 19ATDD013 (GSNSW DRILL ID: MIN_311773), which was drilled by Magmatic Resources Pty Ltd at the Alectown Project about 6.5 km ESE of Alectown and about 23.5 km NNE of Parkes. The Alectown Project is focused on a portion of the Goobang Volcanics, which lie within the Junee-Narromine Volcanic Belt of the Ordovician to early Silurian Macquarie Arc. The age and relationships of the Goobang Volcanics within the evolutionary framework of the Macquarie Arc are poorly understood as the unit is almost completely obscured by thin Quaternary cover. The diorite sampled in 19ATDD013 intrudes a sequence of mafic volcaniclastic rocks attributed to the Goobang Volcanics. Hence, obtaining a zircon U-Pb crystallisation age for the diorite will establish an important minimum depositional age for Goobang Volcanics. Additionally, the diorite body hosts porphyry-style copper-gold mineralisation, the age of which is being investigated separately via Re-Os geochronology of molybdenite. Dating the host diorite will therefore enable the contemporaneity of diorite emplacement and Cu-Au mineralisation to be assessed, with implications for mineral potential studies in the region.
