| sample_remark | Large road cutting on Sofala-Ilford Road, 8.1 km north of Sofala near Yarra Wonga property gate. 250m long, 10 m high road cutting exposure with very fresh rock. Largely semi in-situ monomict basaltic hyaloclastic (or autoclastic) breccia grading to coherent coarsely hornblende-, clinopyroxene- and plagioclase-phyric basalt. Breccia is composed of angular-subangular, granule to cobble size clasts (up to 15 cm) of porphyritic basalt supported in a matrix of fine mafic volcaniclastic sandstone. Rare sndstone beds are poorly sorted, thickly bedded and ungraded. |
