sample_remark This is a fine grained doleritic rock, with a maximum grain size of about 1 mm. It is composed predominantly of plagioclase and pyroxene, with altered ?olivine, opaque grains (both iron oxides and pyrite), calcite, epidote and minor biotite. Fine needles of apatite occur as an accessory mineral. Fine grained micas and serpentine minerals occur in masses with outlines suggesting original olivine crystals. The pyroxene is a titaniferous augite, purple in colour with some colour zoning. Euhedral to subhedral grains are common, and some tend to be sub-ophitic, being partially locked with plagioclase laths. The pyroxene is generally very fresh and is the least altered mineral present. Plagioclase is probably labradorite and varies from fresh to strongly altered. It is replaced by both chlorite and epidote. Calcite occurs mainly as scattered grains up to about 0.1 mm across and does not appear to be replacing any specific mineral. Chlorite, in addition to replacing plagioclase and ?olivine, is widespread as an interstitial phase. It is often associated with a secondary mineral with a radiating habit and anomalous blue interference colours - possibly a member of the epidote group. Epidote with normal birefringence is also present. Thin flakes of biotite up to 0.2 mm in length are relatively fresh but not sufficiently abundant to produce a mineral concentrate. Pyroxene is the only mineral present that could be used for K-Ar dating.
