| sample_remark | The core comprises two rock types. 2430064A is a massive mafic rock composed of randomly oriented pale plagioclase, interstitial grey ferromagnesian grains, and minor interstitial pink patches. Plagioclase was abundant (54%) as 2-4 mm prisms, but is now completely replaced by very fine-grained sericite flecks and remnant albite. Clinopyroxene (25%) forms 1-2 mm anhedral colourless grains with altered margins. Some optically continuous grains partly enclose plagioclase in a subophitic texture. Minor olivine (2%) formed 2-3 mm anhedral grains, now replaced by dense fine-grained green chlorite and minor magnetite. Minor hornblende forms relatively large anhedral interstitial grains with green pleochroism. Magnetite forms subhedral blocky grains with skeletal form. Fine-grained patches (mesostasis) occupy angular interstices throughout the rock, and comprise fine-grained turbid K-feldspar (hematite stained), uncommon clear quartz, ragged hornblende, minor small magnetite, and trace acicular apatite. 2430064B (which probably hosted the zircons) is a differentiated porphyritic rock comprising subequal cream plagioclase and fine-grained pink interstitial groundmass. Primary plagioclase formed randomly oriented 4-5 mm prisms which are completely replaced by fine-grained sericite, zoisite and minor albite. Fresh colourless clinopyroxene (with altered, turbid margins) forms anhedral grains moulded on plagioclase. Minor hornblende with simple twinning and green pleochroism forms bladed prisms to 4 mm, within the mesostasis. Magnetite forms large, skeletal grains in the mesostasis, and appears to have crystallised rapidly. Fine-grained mesostasis (dull pink in hand sample) is abundant. It forms discrete cm-scale patches, but also small angular interstitial patches between plagioclase and clinopyroxene. It is dominated by prismatic to anhedral hematite-stained K-feldspar, with lesser fine grained green hornblende, equant magnetite, and small clear anhedral quartz. |
