sample_remark The Constance Sandstone (South Nicholson Group) extends across the Northern Territory and Queensland (Carter et al., 1961), although its stratigraphic position and definition have been revised several times (Sweet, 2017 and references therein). Rawlings et al. (2008) delineated five members within it (the Hedleys Sandstone Member, Pandanus Siltstone Member, Burangoo Sandstone Member, Wallis Siltstone Member and the Schultz Sandstone Member), and also tentatively correlated it with the Mittiebah Sandstone of the South Nicholson Group in MOUNT DRUMMOND. Outcrop samples of the Constance Sandstone and the Schultz Sandstone Member in Queensland have previously returned maximum deposition ages of 1599 +/- 19 Ma and 1577 +/- 21 Ma, respectively (Carson et al., 2011). Their detrital zircon age spectra are similar, with a prominent mode at ca. 1760 Ma and a subordinate population at ca. 1600 Ma. DDH 83-3 was drilled by Amoco Australia Petroleum in 1983 in western Queensland (Dorrins et al., 1983). It intersects Constance Sandstone, and Anderson et al. (2019a) reported three detrital zircon age spectra, with maximum depositional ages of 1569 +/- 37 Ma (85.27-85.37 m), 1578 +/- 53 Ma (176.09-176.18 m), and 1591 +/- 18 Ma (234.60-234.91 m). These spectra are difficult to interpret as the zircon populations are small, but the shallowest sample contained a single zircon with an age of 1382 +/- 51 Ma (2sigma), based on two analyses. Maximum depositional ages defined by single zircons are generally considered unreliable, and the aim of the present sample is to verify this putative ca. 1382 Ma population. The sandstone analysed in this Record was collected from the depth interval 93.24-93.29 m in DDH 83-3, some 8 m below the shallowest sample reported by Anderson et al. (2019a). It comprises a pale grey-green claystone-siltstone with minor fine-grained micas and minor very thin dark lenses.
