sample_remark The sample was taken from drill-hole TDH6 at a depth interval of 855.54 to 856.50 metres. The drill-hole is situated very close to, and slightly south of, a prominent northeast-southwest-trending magnetic feature known as the Culgoa Shear Zone in the south-eastern Thomson Orogen (Doublier et al., 2018). The Culgoa Shear Zone defines the northern margin of a sedimentary depocentre of poorly-constrained age, known as the Paka Tank Trough. The sample analysed here is interpreted to come from the Paka Tank Trough. The sample is a fine-grained, grey-green, relatively massive rock with intermittent elongate quartz lenses aligned in a strong preferred orientation oblique to the core. At the time of core inspection the rock was interpreted as a possible volcanic, with the quartz lenses representing an original porphyritic texture. The rock was sampled for U-Pb geochronology to provide an age for volcanic activity and a stratigraphic age constraint on the surrounding sedimentary sequence. Subsequent petrographic observations suggest the rock is more likely a volcaniclastic sandstone rather than a lava.
