| sample_remark | Dark brown, platy laminated metasiltstone. The sample displays a foliated granoblastic metamorphic texture. Small grains of albite and lesser quartz form a fine-grained equigranular mosaic throughout the rock. They possibly represent primary clastic grains, now modified by suturing in response to metamorphic recrystallisation. Foliated flakes of muscovite and lesser pleochroic drab greenish brown biotite form a strong penetrative foliation through the rock. Chlorite forms pleochroic pale green flakes sparsely scattered through the rock, and locally concentrated along foliation-parallel segregation bands with quartz and biotite. Opaques (possibly ?ilmenite) form small lath-like grains, oriented in the trace of the foliation. Epidote occurs as scattered small subhedral granules, grains and local coarser aggregates with chlorite. Zircon occurs as rare tiny rounded grains that appear to be preferentially located in opaque-rich laminae (?primary heavy mineral-rich laminae). Tourmaline forms rare small green grains. This sample is considered to have formed as a fine-grained pelitic sediment, probably composed of small crystal fragments of plagioclase and quartz, with accompanying fine detrital clay materials. The rock underwent recrystallisation in response to a regional metamorphic event in the greenschist facies, generating the foliated assemblage of albite + muscovite + biotite + quartz + chlorite + opaques (?ilmenite) + epidote + trace tourmaline. |
