sample_remark albite-rich rock veining the Montstephen Metabasalt. This sample forms part of a coarse-grained albite + actinolite matrix at brecciated contact between albitised amphibolite and metasediment. This sample displays an inequigranular or patchy granoblastic alteration texture. Albite dominates the rock, and occurs in two forms: i) Some albite occurs as tiny ragged grains that form dense sutured microgranular granoblastic mosaics in diffuse patches up to several millimetres in size. This albite has the appearance of representing altered host rock. ii) Much albite occurs as larger subhedral prisms of random orientation, which appear to be concentrated in indistinct patches, bands or veins. These albite crystals contain diffuse clouds of tiny fluid inclusions, consistent with crystallisation in the presence of a hydrothermal fluid. Actinolite occurs in minor amount, forming local large (several millimetres long) subhedral pale green prisms concentrated with the coarser-grained albite prisms. Sphene occurs in significant amount for an accessory phase, forming subhedral lozenge-shaped crystals and aggregates. Quartz occurs in minor amount as angular interstitial grains between plagioclase prisms. Apatite occurs in trace amount as local large ragged grains. The primary origin of this sample remains obscure, but it possibly represents an albitised rock which has undergone strong pervasive alteration and veining, resulting in development of patches and veins of albite + actinolite + minor sphene + quartz+ apatite.
