Williams 2001 paraphrased: "Samples of the Cooma Complex were collected along an approximately east-west transect extending westwards. Biotite zone metasediment sample 95-32 was taken from a road cut where slaty metapelites with metapsammitic interbeds up to ~0.5 m wide outcrop in isoclinal folds with near-vertical axial planes. The sampled unit was a 0.1 m layer of semipelite, selected because comparison of zircon provenance between low-grade metasediment and the granodiorite required a sample of a ‘fertile’ lithology that might possibly yield a low-temperature partial melt. The rock is predominantly recrystallised granular quartz, with fine flakes of biotite defining the schistosity. Zircon from the biotite schist has a wide range of grainsize (30-250 um), colour (colourless to pale-pink to purple to brown), clarity, and shape (sharply euhedral whole grains to angular fragments to strongly rounded remnants). Such variation is to be expected in a physically and chemically resistant detrital mineral derived from a range of sources of different ages. Strongly rounded grains dominate the population, their frosted surfaces, characteristic of brittle grains worn by abrasion during sediment transport and reworking, visible under an optical microscope. Even the ‘euhedral’ grains are damaged, most obviously at the corners of the crystals and along the edges where faces meet. Such damage is most evident in secondary electron images, and is visible in cathodoluminescence images as microindentations around the edge of most rounded grains. Except for the near-euhedral grains, internal zoning is truncated at the broken or worn grain margins."",
